  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael W. Gioffredi -- The Gioffredi Edition : Play Video ( Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from TAO -- useless : there are no illustrations/plates in this edition (at least the paperback volume i was sent). this makes the book essentially useless. the quality of the free online version illustrations/plates are very low and near useless as well. whatever the historical value of the text it's difficult to practice without the works being discussed. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from InTheDustyWest -- You can trust this version of this vital book for artists : I read reviews of people who bought this outstanding book, (which has been reprinted many times by many different sources), and their book didn't include the diagrams or plates. So I found this version edited by Michael Gioffredi and it's an exact copy of the orignal printing. I got in on Kindle but love it so much I found it in paperback, and am thrilled to finally have it. This is an outstanding book full of information that will enrich and elevate the abilities of any artist who reads it and puts it into practice. Highly recommend!! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from InTheDustyWest -- A vital book for artists, and this is the correct printing of it. : Grateful to have this book, republished by Michael Gioffredi. This is an exact reprint of the first edition by Harold Speed, published in 1913. Be warned, there are other reprints of this book, and some of them don't include the plates and diagrams, which makes it almost useless. This one, however, is perfect and exactly as the author intended. A fantastic help to any artist, I cannot recommend this book highly enough!! ( Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Touches the heart of the Artist : This book speaks to the artistic soul of a person. I highly reccomend that you read and make your own assumptions as it will be different for each of us. To me it was the answer I have been searching for to understand the true nature of releasing the artist spirit from within. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- over priced and over hyped : Because Amazon did not sort the book reviews according to publisher or edition, I paid $19 for the Geoffredi version. Sum total that I learned from this book: learning to draw cartoons by copying and from your imagination is just as important as learning to paint while looking at a model. That's it. This book is very hard to understand because it was written so long ago. Surely someone in the last hundred years wrote a newer book that says the same thing in modern English. Don't pay more than $3 for this book. Better yet, don't buy it. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Molly -- Great advanced, classical concepts! : This is a great book that discusses advanced concepts in composition, line unity and rhythm, and mass drawing. He talks about what makes a portrait really effective and always encourages drawing or painting under the influence of the strong emotions that which your are looking at inspires. He is highly opinionated ( but I happen to like his opinions for the most part) and can be a little dry in his writing (it was written a while ago) but well worth the effort. There are concepts he discusses that I can refer back to and grow into as an artist. He talks about what effect horizontal and vertical lines have in a composition, how to stabilize a picture. He illustrates his points with examples from masters or diagrams of concepts, although I agree with the previous reviewer, some of the pictures are hard to see clearly. Toward the end he discusses working from memory but not in great detail. He just wet my appetite on that one. There are a few exercises in the book but it is mostly a discussion of classical concepts that make so many of the paintings we see in museums effective. A very important book for me in my education of becoming an artist. I highly recommend it. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2011 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from --oOo-- -- Altered “edition” : I bought this book to actually learn to draw the pages were mashed together with page numbers in the middle of the text and it also had very few of the actual images that are referred to, most have been deleted so you don’t understand what he’s referring to. This artist is a true professional and took the time to write a through communication on drawing to impart a message and that message has been degraded by this “reproduction” or rather alteration of the book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Atack -- Painters read this - you'll be amazed! : A surprisingly interesting book - I wish I had read it when I was starting out as an artist! Written in 1913, before two world wars and before a succession of huge changes in the art world, at a time when it was normal to talk about "beauty" and "the sublime", Impressionism was still controversial, and yet there was an awareness that factory made goods and cheap printing (still black and white mostly) were impacting on lifestyles and the spread of knowledge. Despite all this, there are nuggets of invaluable knowledge and thought provoking reflections to be found throughout, and much about composition, which is still relevant to the artist today. My only criticism is that the book title is misleading, since most of the content refers as much to painting as to drawing. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2015 )

I doesn't justify the price to me. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 17, 2015 )

Schade. ( Reviewed in Germany on June 8, 2016 )
